Individual Therapy

Individual Therapy for Adults

At Full Life Counseling, we are passionate about working with current military, veterans, law enforcement officers, and first responders healing from acute and traumatic stress injuries or who are ready for their next phase of growth and to experience greater levels of fulfillment than have been possible before.

We incorporate the DBT Skills Training Assumptions which state:

  • We are all doing the best we can. We don’t know what we don’t know.
  • We all want to improve. There’s a difference between “wanting” and “willing”.
  • We all need to do better, try harder, and be more motivated to change. As long as we’re alive, we have room to grow. The universe doesn’t move for what we only “want”; change happens when we become “willing”.
  • We may not have caused all of our own problems, and we must solve our problems anyway. We’re here to help you find solutions.
  • New behavior has to be learned in all relevant contexts. Practice, practice, practice!
  • All behaviors (actions, thoughts, emotions) are caused. Just because you aren’t consciously aware of the cause doesn’t mean it “came out of nowhere”.
  • Figuring out and changing the causes of behavior work better than judging and blaming. Saying “that’s how I’ve always been” isn’t true and it doesn’t work. We may have done something in a certain way for a long time, but we didn’t come into the world that way. We learned it which means we can learn something new.

Our goal is to keep therapy as productive as possible which means limiting therapy “interfering behaviors” like venting, patterns of showing up late, frequent cancellations, no-shows, not practicing skills, and not following through on treatment recommendations.

We do not have “easy buttons” or magic wands. We are not witches, wizards, or any other kind of magical creature. We can help you on the way but ultimately, you’ll get out of therapy as much as you’re willing to put into the process. We are happy to work with people who are ready and willing to get bigger than their circumstances, creating a fulfilled life that is worth showing up in (even on hard days).
